Worldwide Volunteer Day Partnership
 | Mission
| | West Dallas Community Center youth became full-fledged partners with Nortel LearniT ambassadors and Sun Microsystems volunteers in a fun-filled Worldwide Volunteer Day event focusing on careers, using computer and video camera technology, and communication skills. The unique joint endeavor of two large enterprises, Nortel LearniT and Sun will continue at the West Dallas Community Center throughout the year with a quarterly focus on careers and using technology to inspire learning. This partnership grows out of the Nortel LearniT and Curriki alliance to co-develop their website platforms into one of the world's largest, free online sources of education materials. | Key contributions from Nortel LearniT ambassadors were: - Creating Career Bytes segments with the kids. The pictures on the left tell the story of the fun, learning, and engagement that took place--on the part of both the students and the volunteers! Nortel LearniT's Career Bytes are short (5-minute) video interviews of professionals by students aimed at giving high school students an idea of possible careers in the field of technology or careers that use technology in general. Career Bytes (available online at http://www.NortelLearniT.org/resources/career_bytes/ connects the student interviewers and the video viewers with real-world experiences and provides a free, entertaining and valuable tool for high school students to explore and plan for opportunities outside of school.

- Equipment donations for the Center, including:
The Sun Microsystems partners, already active in the West Dallas Community Center environment, having donated Sun Ray Desktop hardware and software. Jeff Blanchard of Sun Microsystems led their technical team in doing routine maintenance at both West Dallas Community Centers. The technical team updated the systems with an icon for the USB drive so that the kids could easily download their homework to take home or to school.
