| 2nd Annual Career Day Event - February 20, 2009: Nortel LearniT Ambassadors continue their partnership with Graham Middle School, NC, by meeting with this years' eighth graders in the second annual, well-received Career Day Event. The Nortel Research Triangle Park (RTP) employees continued the dialog on today's choices and tomorrow's opportunities. The Ambassadors' stories of their own challenges and their own techniques in seizing opportunities resonated with the students as they told of their philosophies and some quite amazing events in their lives that they had to deal with and move on from to achieve career success (including fleeing a dictatorship by water in the dark of night at age 5). These introductory presentations seized students' interests, as did all the breakout groups, including one group's technology-infused "outside the box thinking" video of how a bird with its much-smaller-than-human brain solved a real time dilemma. Use the Nortel LearniT Roadmap for Creating a Successful Career Day to spearhead your own events: detailed ideas, examples, and ready-to-use resources. 1st Annual Career Day Event: The first event in the Nortel LearniT Alamance Burlington School System (ABSS) educational partnership emphasized good decision-making in the opportunities you seize and the way you face challenges. Key event organizers include Edgar Murphy, Nortel LearniT; Paul Grooms, Nortel LearniT Ambassador; and Adam Rose and Anshuman Mukerji, both Nortel New Grad Leadership program participants.
The event had a powerful impact on Nortel LearniT Ambassadors and school administrators, too! Hector Rosado, a Nortel Customer Service Account Manager for C&W/TSTT Caribbean Operations said "I received one question, that really made me think. One young man, asked me, "Had you ever thought about dropping out?". This reminded me of all the challenges I faced at his age and during my high school years. I wondered what difficulties this new generation will face and if we are ready or equipped to deal with their difficulties." From GMS Principal Teresa Faucette: "This forum allowed our students to hear career advice from presenters. It was great for our students to interact with these diverse professionals. Our students appreciated their candidness with past struggles, challenges and successes. One of the most beneficial outcomes of this forum was the realization that students do not have to be certain about a career path at this point." |
